Education in Australia

Education in Australia is usually regulated by the individual states government. The education system has 3 stages: Primary education, Secondary education and Tertiary education.

The age when you can leave school is stated by the legislation in each state and it varies from 15 – 17 years of age.

After secondary education is complete, the further stages are regulated by the Australian qualifications framework. This covers nationally recognised qualifications in schools, vocational education and training.

The school year generally runs from late January until mid December for primary and secondary schools and late February to mid November for universities.

There is no regulated pre-school education in Australia and it is not compulsory but there are day care centres and play groups available.

Schooling is then compulsory from the ages of 6 – 16. Most Australians go to a government run school and the rest go to independent schools. Government schools are free while the independent schools are fee paying. Both types of schools however, have to adhere to the same curriculum.
